This month our meeting presentation is: "Stump the Wiz!" I have known Laron Southcott (AKA "The Wiz") for many years, and I've yet to see him stumped... Well, OK he may not know Dudley Do-Right's Horse's name, but I've yet to see him stumped with a computer problem.

I know Laron's number (647-0182) by heart, since I've had to call him so many times. I can't recommend his service highly enough. He is a treasure to the Mac (and PC) community.

Of course I always try to solve problems myself first... Here are some excellent resources:

It also helps to really do some "critical thinking" when it comes to computer problems (or any problems, for that matter...). For instance, Last month I moved my G-4 into my wife's office, and the color of the monitor was way off. No greens at all! So I tried a different monitor. Same problem. "Aha" I thought, "it must be in the video card!" So I called Laron and brought him the computer. He hooked it up to his monitor and it was fine. "Well, maybe just taking out the card & putting it back in was all it needed..." we thought. When I got it home, it was still messed up! Then I noticed the one common thing. Every time it didn't work we were using the same cable, and upon looking at the cable it turned out that it had a pin that was bent. I was able to bend it back with some needle-nosed pliers, and then everyone was happy.

Lesson: Always look at the simplest thing first!

Enjoy the issue!
