It's hard to believe October is here. But here we are... it's Trick or Treat time!
I can think of some really special "Treats" that come our way as Macintosh users. First is the incredible power and reliability of OS X. I waited a long time before switching to OS X. I didn't trust it at first and I also didn't want to pay for a lot of new software. But, when I finally bit the bullet and jumped to Jaguar (OS 10.2.x), I could not believe the speed and stability of this Unix-based operating system. Panther (OS 10.3.x) is even better.
Not only is OS X the most stable operating system available for personal computers, but it's virtually invulnerable to the flood of viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware and adware that plague Windows users. For example, the June 3rd (2004) issue of Information Week posted an article entitled, "New Viruses Hit 30-Month High". According to Sophos, a world leader in protecting businesses against viruses and spam, there were 959 new viruses released on the Internet in May of this year, the most since December 2001.
Yes, we all get hit with Spam, but can you remember the last time you even heard of a virus attacking a Macintosh computer? Think about it... when was the last time you had to invest half a day to clean out some nasty spyware or completely wipe your hard drive because a virus destroyed your ability to use your computer? While that's an all too common occurrence for PC users, it hardly ever happens to "Mac" users.
The "Trick" for us "Mac" users has to do with the fact that personal computers are still not as easy to use nor as reliable as telephones. Of course, they do a lot more than phones, but still, to use a computer requires a fair amount of knowledge, experience and outside assistance to make them work the way we want them to work. If you use a personal computer, you have to invest considerable time and energy in dealing with different kinds of software and hardware problems. In addition, technology is constantly changing at a faster and faster rate which means we face frequent issues related to updating or upgrading software or hardware. So, it really helps to have access to a network of knowledgeable friends and colleagues who are willing to assist when needed.
Our OCTOBER meeting builds on this club theme of people helping people. Our topic is "STUMP THE WIZ". Here's your big opportunity to bring your most challenging computer questions, problems, etc. to see if Laron (AKA: "The Wiz") can come up with a legitimate answer. We usually limit the Q&A discussion to 30 minutes, but this time we'll dedicate the entire meeting to questions. Laron has promised a prize to the person who stumps him! It should be fun evening.
Cheers,
Mac
