President's Spotlight

by Mac Carter, president@whatmug.org

August meant two things... the Olympics and WhatMUG's first annual picnic and swap meet. The Olympics is truly a celebration in greatness -- a time when the world sets aside its differences and comes together to enjoy and appreciate the very best athletic competition. Watching the various events night after night, one cannot help but be amazed by the incredible feats of strength, courage agility and excellence. In a similar way, I think Apple Computer deserves a Gold medal not only for wonderfully fresh industrial design, but more so for the way Macintosh computers have set the standard for excellence in technology for over 20 years.

Our club picnic was a lot of fun. The main dish was super (I'm a rabid lasagna fan) and the side dishes that everyone contributed were great. There were some hot gear swapping deals going on at the back of the room and Laron had the music pounding out of an iPod through some portable speakers. The weather could not have been better and the brownies topped off a really good time.

Speaking of iPod's, Apple has released has released its latest generation of iPods. www.apple.com/ipod/ If you have an older iPod like I do, it's hard not to feel jealous. But, I'll wait until the iPod comes with a built-in phone, calendar, contact list, GPS, camera, the works, etc.

In case you haven't heard, HP and Dell have teamed up with Office Depot for a limited-time recycling program. HP said that it would accept old electronics equipment, from PCs to printers to TV's to cell phones. You simply drop it off at any Office Depot outlet from July 18th to Sept. 6th, free of charge. I've donated an old analog cell phone and my broken Epson printer.

IDC, a subsidiary of International Data Group (IDG), reports that Apple shows a 9.3 percent U.S. unit sales growth. This is great news at a time when computers have almost become a commodity sold in grocery stores. Congratulations, Apple. For details, refer to: MacCentral

Our SEPTEMBER meeting topic is "Networking" -- A brief introduction to home networks... covering basic networking equipment and set up. Wireless networking such as Apple's Airport also will be discussed along with advantages, disadvantages and concerns of wireless and wired networks.

Hope you had a great summer!

—Mac
