Trouble shooting and THE LIST that helps.
When the computer disrupts your life.
It just does not want to work for you.
You are ready to throw it out the window.
Stop and think.
What did I do last?
New software?
New hardware?
New/old peripheral (external device)?
- For hardware, disconnect all external devices.
- Reconnect the power and keyboard/mouse.
- Functions?
- If so, plug one device back in at a time, and restart, to test.
- Different cables?
- If not, what software (drivers) did you install, remove or disable?
- For software, uninstall/disable last install.
- Restart, and hold shift key down (disables drivers (9 or 10)).
These are general recommendations to get your computer out of trouble. Obviously the techniques can be quite complex beyond the above suggestions.
Hmmm?! How are you going to remember all the different items you have dealt with?
THE LIST!
The list? What?
Take a pad of paper (yes paper!), place it by your computer.
Write down whatever problem you might have.
Date it (the entry).
Why?
This servers two purposes:
A log of activities, involving your computer
A thought process for you (maybe your Tech).
When you write it down, it will help you remember what went on, and gives you way to back track. The other purpose is, as you fill the page up, more often than not you will figure out some of the items you have written down. In addition THE LIST will help a technician diagnose the problem. This is useful on the phone or if you need onsite help.
When you do need help, you can keep the time reduced by referring to THE LIST, and not get too distracted by other learning processes.
Keep yourself, and the computer of your choosing on good terms!
Smile!
